what is sap basis and sap netweaver

Basis is a unique layer in the SAP architecture.

It acts as a bridge between the computing infrastructure i.e. operating system, database, network architecture and the various modules in SAP such as FICO, MM, SD etc.

R/3 Basis includes client/server architecture and configuration, a relational database management system (RDBMS), and a graphical user interface (GUI).

In addition to the interface between system elements, Basis components include a development environment for R/3 applications, and a data dictionary, as well as user and system administration and monitoring tools.

SAP Netweaver is new product introduced by company SAP.

SAP NetWeaver supports several technologies like Microsoft .NET, Oracle Java EE, and IBM Web Sphere for customizations and other extending processes for customers.

SAP Netweaver has different components as-

If we need t o compare SAP Basis and SAP Netweaver from administration point of view, I can say SAP Basis is the root of both SAP WEB AS and SAP Netweaver.

SAP Basis has only ABAP stack, that means only ABAP programs can run. SAP Basis now evolved into SAP Netweaver to support built in web services and java technology.
